How the event actually works
Members at Town Center 10 or above sign up Monday through Wednesday (UTC) into three lanes of 20, so a full roster is 60 and an alliance needs at least 10 participants to enter matchmaking. Matchmaking closes Wednesday night and groups you with five other alliances near your bracket, then up to five one-hour rounds run Thursday to Saturday. Registration snapshots your buffs and pets at sign-up, so activate everything before you register, not before the fight.
Battles resolve automatically as simulated PvP with expedition skills active, and one rule shapes everything: each march retires after defeating two enemy marches. You win a round by taking two of the three lanes; if nobody does, total kills decide it. Round 1 is blind, but between rounds your R4/R5 can read the enemy's previous arrangements in battle history and reassign your lanes during the prep window. That loop, hidden current assignments plus visible past ones, is what makes lane strategy a real game.
The 10-body floor
The two-defeat cap has a hard consequence most alliances miss: a lane's 20 marches can only be cleared by at least 10 enemy marches, because each of yours retires after its second win. A lane with 9 or fewer members mathematically cannot beat a full lane, no matter whose whale is in it. Two rules fall out. Never put fewer than 10 people in a lane you intend to win, and if you can't fill 60 slots, fill your two priority lanes completely before the sacrifice lane gets anyone.
Why 2-strong-1-weak is the default
In a typical alliance the top 20 members hold about 60% of total combat power and the top 40 hold about 85%. Split that top 40 evenly across two lanes (snake-draft them: 1st and 4th strongest in lane A, 2nd and 3rd in lane B, and so on) and each priority lane carries roughly 42% of your alliance's power. An opponent who spreads evenly puts about 33% in every lane. Your two stacks beat whichever lanes they land against, so you win 2-1 no matter how the lane slots line up. We modeled this across roster shapes and strength ratios: against an even spread, the 2-1 plan wins every arrangement down to about 90% of the opponent's total power.
When you're the weaker alliance: the ladder
Against a stronger alliance also running 2-1, stacking harder doesn't help: their priority lanes simply outweigh yours. The play that does work is the top-mid-weak ladder. Put your top 20 in one super-lane, your next 20 in a mid lane, your bottom 20 in a sacrifice lane, then aim them: super-lane against one of their priority stacks, mid lane against their sacrifice lane, your sacrifice against their other stack. Your super-lane concentrates around 60% of your power against a stack holding about 42% of theirs, so it wins even when your alliance is a quarter weaker overall, and your mid lane beats their castoffs. Two lanes, round won.
The catch is aim. Blind, the alignment lands about one round in three. Scouted, it lands every time: read where their sacrifice lane sat in the last round from battle history, and if they don't shuffle, the ladder converts that habit into a win at strength ratios where nothing else works. Copy their lane order in round 1 if you must, then ladder rounds 2 through 5.
The counter cycle
These three arrangements chase each other in a circle, which is why no single lineup is "correct":

The numbers come from our simulation of top-heavy rosters (top 20 holding ~60% of power) with lanes resolved by total power plus the 10-body floor. Real fights add hero and formation noise, so treat the thresholds as soft edges rather than cliffs. The cycle itself is structural and survives any roster shape we tried.
Playing the favorite
If you're clearly stronger, your enemy's only path is the ladder, and the ladder needs to find your sacrifice lane. Deny it: shuffle which slot your sacrifice occupies every single round, even when you win. A shuffled ladder is a 1-in-3 gamble instead of a scripted upset. Once your advantage is overwhelming (roughly a third stronger), an even spread becomes unbeatable in every lane and also maximizes kills, which matters because rewards scale with marches defeated and kills break tied rounds.
Reading battle history
- Find their sacrifice lane in each past round. Same slot twice is a habit; habits are what ladders eat.
- Check whether their strongest members moved lanes between rounds. Static alliances are safe to counter-arrange; shufflers force you back to the default 2-1.
- Track which of the six alliances in your bracket you haven't fought yet, and scout them before your round, not after.
Formations inside the lane
The community-standard ratio for priority lanes is 50% infantry, 20% cavalry, 30% archers, shifting toward 40/20/40 for aggressive lanes and 60/15/25 for sacrifice lanes that just need to blunt two enemy marches each. Expedition skills fire in these fights, so slot-1 hero choice follows the same first-skill math as rallies: the joiner rankings apply here too.

Can one whale carry a lane?
No. The two-defeat cap retires every march after its second win, so a lane needs at least 10 members capable of winning fights. Depth beats a single spike, which is why snake-drafting your top 40 across two lanes outperforms dumping the top 20 into one, unless you're deliberately building a ladder super-lane.
We have 45 active members. How do we split?
Fill both priority lanes to 20 first, and put the remaining 5 in the sacrifice lane knowing it can't win. The 10-body floor means spreading 45 as 15/15/15 turns three winnable lanes into three coin flips against full lanes.
When do buffs need to be active?
At sign-up. Registration snapshots your stats, buffs, and pets, so a two-hour pet buff popped Wednesday before you register counts all week, and one popped Thursday doesn't.
Does the ladder work against an even spread?
No, and it's the worst thing you can throw at one: their every lane beats your mid and sacrifice lanes. Ladder only when you've confirmed the opponent runs 2-1 and doesn't shuffle.
